Initially the European immigrant to the Atlantic coast of North America tried to gain some understanding & control over the new weather patterns & geography he was encountering by creating physical spaces to meet his basic needs for shelter, food, safety, & family. When he accomplished this, he often attempted to shape his personal spaces to project his desired image to others - his wealth, his power, his refinement, his beliefs, & his knowledge.
